Current situation

Mariupol is one of the largest cities in the Donetsk region and one of the most developed industrial towns in the eastern Ukrainian region with a population of about 500 thousand people. Mariupol is among the ten largest cities in Ukraine, a significant industrial and economic center of the country, a major center of metallurgy and mechanical engineering, as well as a major seaport.

It is one of the top cities in Ukraine by the volume of harmful substance emissions by industrial enterprises. There are the biggest environment polluters like «Azovstal» metallurgical plant and «Ilyich's Mariupol metallurgical plant» (MMK im. Ilyicha).

Mariupol is among the leading cities of the Donetsk region by the amount of solid waste.

There are two landfills of MSW in the city region, which are included in the top hundred of the largest landfills officially registered in Ukraine.

These polygons were created spontaneously as natural landfills, which was a significant breach of waste disposal norms and they do not meet sanitary and environmental standards: they have no leachate collection systems, no groundwater and soil protection layers, no surface water drainage systems, the working surface area of polygons is not isolated, no gas drainage systems. All the required environmental protection systems are absent.

At present, MSW landfills are the municipal property, filed and operated under the management of "MSW Landfill" (Polygon TBO) municipal enterprise.

(1 - Polygon number 1, Primorsky region; 2 - Polygon number 2 - Ordzhonikidze region)

Polygon number 1 (Primorsky region)

- Operating since 1967.

- Actual area of the polygon is 12,404 hectares;

- The actual height is 7-23 meters above the earth's surface;

- The actual depth is - 5.10 m;

- The landfill capacity at the present time is about 2.3 million million m3;

- The amount of accumulated waste in the landfill is about 2,0-2,6 million tons of solid waste.

According to the landfill operator about 250-300 thousand m3 of waste/year (60-70 thousand tons/year) was transported to the site in last years.

The landfill is closed since May 2008.

This landfills gas generation potential is estimated at about 4,0-6,0 million m3 of biogas a year, potential gas collection estimated at about 2,0-3,0 million m3/year.

The following enterprises are close to the landfill: OJSC «Evroazovservis», an autodepot, a brick plant, greenhouse crop farm (distance 1,5 km).

Polygon number 2 (Ordzhonikidze region)

- Is operating since 1976.

- Actual area of the polygon is 12.131 hectares.

- The actual height is about 25-30 m above the earth's surface.

- The actual depth is 5.10 m.

- The amount of landfill at the present time is about 2.4 million million m3.

- The amount of accumulated waste in the landfill is about 2,0-2,8 million tons of solid waste.

About 200 tons of municipal waste is transported to the landfill every year. The closure of the landfill is planned for 2010, after the construction of the new landfill near the existing one.

This landfills gas generation potential is estimated at about 7,0-9,0 million m3 of biogas a year, potential gas collection estimated at about 3,0-5,0 million m3/year.

The following enterprises are in the sanitary protection zone of the polygon: OJSC"Stalkov", OJSC "Azovstal", LLC "Service-Invest". The distance to the Kalmius river is about 100 m.
